HIVEhope Swap + Shop


Several years ago I needed to find a way to give to a cause I had become aware of in my community. At the time, I was unable to afford the donation I desired to give, but from this desire an idea gave the ability to raise the funds instead. 

Within an evening of fun, swapping, and shopping, our desired goal was met, and our first HIVEhope Swap + Shop took place. What is a Swap + Shop you might ask? 

First... let me tell you about our Swap and Shop gift recipient whom many of you already know and love.

Rebecca Burrier, a loving single mom and domestic abuse survivor, has been serving her apartment community with the utmost love and grace as she advocates and cares for those in circumstances many of us can not imagine.

In recent months she has housed those in need, encouraged women and men in desperate situations, fed those who were hungry, and literally given the shirt and shoes off her back to love and care for her neighbors and community members. She is an inspiration, but also one that is still in need.

I recently had the privilege of visiting her home to assess these very needs. It has been on many hearts for some time to provide the help of organization and maintenance in her personal living space, and I got a glimpse of how we might be able to bless her in such a way.

Therefore, you are invited to a HIVEhope Fundraising Initiative for Rebecca, her family, and the Brazos community, as we know any gift we bestow to her will be lovingly used to bless others. Please read further details below as we rally together not simply for a worthy cause, but for our sister. Rebecca, if you are reading this, as I have heard you say to others, "We got you, girl."

ALL proceeds from Saturday's event will be donated to benefit Rebecca and her family as we supply organizational materials, fresh paint, maintenance, furniture, and other needs to continue making her house a home for all who may enter and be blessed.

FAQ's

What is a HIVEhope Swap + Shop?

This event is an opportunity to not only clean out your closet of gently used items, but also to give to a need within the community. For every clean, un-stained, garment and/or accessory submitted to the swap, you will have option of shopping for the same amount. In other words, if you bring ten items, you can leave with ten items "new to you" from the event. Note ALL leftover items will be donated to the Neighborhood Needs Organization on Hulen Street.

How does a Swap + Shop work? 

Upon check-in you will be given a ticket for each acceptable item for shopping and an option the last hour of the event to fill a bag full for a $10 donation.  

What if I can not attend, can I still give?

All the "yes's" and "thank you's." You may give monetarily and/or with donations. The greater need is funds, but both are appreciated. (We will be following up via e-mail with a list of needs for physical items as well for future donations, but please DO NOT bring these items to the event on the 28th.)

Why do you charge at the door?

We are raising funds! We will be purchasing items such as paint, maintenance materials, organizational items, and furniture. 

What to bring?

Gently used unstained or damaged garments, accessories (such as current jewelry or shoes).

What not to bring?

Soiled, damaged, or outdated items, vintage items are accepted if a current trend (Otherwise grandmother's sweaters might need to be made into scarves instead), used or unused beauty or consumable products or appliances.

When can I drop physical donations for this event?

An early porch *drop-off is preferred Wednesday, April 25th - Friday, April 27th, but a pick-up can be arranged for a $10 donation.  Otherwise, please bring your items the day of the event for check-in.  (*The event/drop-off address will be sent following your RSVP)

Can I volunteer for this event?

Yes! Here's our list of volunteers needed: 

  • Before the Event: donation pick-ups, social media help*
  • Day of: check-in helper, inventory helper, clean-up, donation drop-off to Neighborhood Needs
  • Social Media & Sponsorship Help: Please post this invite and opportunity anywhere on your social media forums, but please do not post the address to the event as it will be sent to those whom affirm an RSVP. Sponsorship opportunities listed below.
